super late post… because again, life… so i went the annual giant lantern festival in san fernando, pampanga last… err… last december (sorry na). went on a weekday and not on the main event day because all you’ll ever see on that day are selfie sticks and people’s heads. was able to get really close to the lanterns and here are my favorite pixxors…

particularly liked sto. nino’s lantern though, it looked like a giant flower wreath most of the time but

it had a majestic finale.

dolores keeps winning yearly but i will always have a penchant for telabastagan, hihi. this baranggay won when i attended my first festival… they’re still awesome. so eun, it was fun watching the lights, hoping to see the lanterns again next time.

late post is late… anyhoo, i went to cutud in san fernando pampanga last march to see the flagellants and the crucifixion rites that’s being held there annually. we had to walk a kilometer or two to the crucifixion site and there were penitents walking as well… they had cuts on their back and they’d flog themselves almost in sync… at least those that went on groups. on a side note, i got a lot of blood spatters.

GEDC2601
GEDC2600

the crucifixion site was vast, but there were not enough tents and shade, they had tents for ‘vips’, meh. poor people like us had to get fried in the heat… there were no trash cans except for the vendors’, and there were no toilets. penitensiya talaga, hahaha. we found a spot near the crosses.

GEDC2621
GOPR2531

roamed around before i died of dehydration, lulz. there are lots of sellers that would pester you to buy their towels, hats, drinks, and such.

GOPR2574
GOPR2582
GOPR2583

ventured out the streets while waiting for the crucifixion play… actually i was trying to find some shade, haha, i got really burned on this trip. on the other hand, there are lots of vendors lined up in the streets with colorful wares, you’d never get bored if you get tired of ogling the penitents.

GEDC2646
GEDC2635

these are probably the best pixxors i have of the play… because everything else i have is covered in umbrellas and selfie sticks, hay. i’m not the most religious person, and i went to see the culture. it was interesting to find people harming themselves to prove their devotion and atone for their sins, you should go see this event, if you need a faith boost or… err, tan yourself, haha. might come back next year.

went to this year’s hot air balloon fiesta, and i had to battle hordes of zombies err… the lines were so terrible (as compared to the previous years’) i’d probably get trampled on before my brains get eaten in the event of a zombie apocalypse, hahaha! anyhoo i found a spot near the fence, laid my trusty old lagu blanket and sat there until the program started.

GEDC2498
GEDC2540

paragliders carried the philippine flag and there was a balloon that’s made to look like our flag (which is owned by an american per the commentators) which is coincidentally the hare balloon for the day and they made that one go up first… i gave it a small salute.

they set off one balloon after another, some i’ve already seen, and some are new, but what stood out to me was the little boy and little girl balloons, it was valentine’s day that day and those balloons were sort of going out on a date, i think. haha.

there were lots of vendors during the fest, there were fast food but i geared towards the sellers that sold, well, home-cooked style-ish.

P_20160214_075221

i settled for good old tocino though and i had the egg removed since i’m not the biggest egg fan but the seller was so kind she gave me vegetables instead. also, this came with the softest rice ever, just the way i like it! i bought sago too.

i roamed around after eating all that rice and there are always still a lot to see… you can get some toys around the bazaars, ogle warplanes, buy souvenirs, evade obstacles… lol. i bought a few stuff for pasalubong and then our tour group headed home by ten am. i had fun yo!

our next stop was betis crafts, which is a manufacturer of high quality furniture that are exported to other planets… err i mean to hotels worldwide. was thinking of my dad the whole time, mainly because he’s picky when it comes to furniture and because i wore the shirt he let me borrow, which is like ten times larger than what i wear but it’s super comfortable. anyhoo, here are my favorites…

so… i strayed away again from the whole group because the ‘tour guide’ has literally morphed into ‘teacher’, nyahaha! but i found and admired these lovelies while they were all blabbing somewhere.

IMG_3580

the best item in the whole showroom was this princess bed… because ozummm princess bed is ozummm.

IMG_3590
GEDC2157
IMG_3599

after ogling all that furniture, we had some lemongrass tea and turon platano. noms. yes, the tour guide also had some commentary about the food, haha. although, next to wintermelon and mountain tea, i really love lemongrass, which made up for it.

there are other stuff other than furniture that’ll fascinate you in case you’re visiting betis crafts such as vintage objects, wooden statues, and old mirrors… at least, if you’re into that stuff, lol.

IMG_3557

also found a trailing plant with flowers, i forgot what it’s called, but it looks pretty. so eun, there’s still so many nice places to go to in pampanga, planning to drop by again sometime soon!

i am not exactly fond of churches and i’m not the most religious person in the planet… i knew we had a church in our itinerary and thought i’d focus on ogling stuff instead since i knew that the tour guide would turn this part of the tour into a history lecture.

GEDC2151
GEDC2154

this is the last church i went to since forever my ilocos trip. yes, i’m a big sinner, haha. although, i do go to the ozummm ones. betis church is in guagua, pampanga and from what i remember, it was built around the 1600s. its exterior is rather ornate, with the walls covered in intricate patterns.

IMG_3514
IMG_3534
IMG_3533
IMG_3535

we entered the church from the museum area, and it was reminiscent of my old college with similar doors, floors, and laypeople bustling about. i studied for four years in an all-girls catholic college… and it does look a bit like a convent, teehee. and so this part of betis church felt sort of cozy to me.

IMG_3522
IMG_3529
IMG_3525
GEDC2155

the main church though felt a little bit cold, it was huge and dark and when it’s this empty, every step echoes sort of eerily. but everything gets warmer when you look up at all the murals. it’s kind of like looking at a religious nintendo 3ds with all that trompe l’oeil, lols.

IMG_3517
IMG_3530
IMG_3518

so yeah, just ogled stuff because i didn’t want to listen to the tour guide blab passionately about church history, although if art is your hustle, you’d definitely enjoy looking around this church. the laypeople are also very kind and would guide you around in case your tour guide is still on boring teacher mode, hahaha!

joined a tour group to pampanga some months back, finally documenting it here in three parts…

GEDC2142
GEDC2140

we headed to mexico, pampanga to atching lilian’s house. it looks really old and somewhat creepy. there’s also a small hut nearby, and what’s supposed to be the courtyard has been turned into an alfresco dining space. on the other hand, if you don’t know atching lilian, she’s pampanga’s celebrity cook, and also the sweetest, wittiest, little old lady i have ever met.

IMG_3509
IMG_3494
IMG_3493
IMG_3495

i roamed around a bit and found some interesting stuff… ogling the place is kind of like going back to the past when there were no electric ranges and sacrifices were made over fire… err i mean, cookware was made of wood and clay instead of the usual non-stick products that i use, nyahaha.

GEDC2144
IMG_3499
IMG_3500

we ate before the cooking demo, and i can’t remember what the dishes were called anymore, charot. but everything’s good and surprisingly mid-ground imo. what i mean is, nothing’s too spicy, too sweet, or too salty.

GEDC2146
IMG_3502
IMG_3504

i took a video of the whole baking demo but haven’t exactly cleared out the noise, would share it… someday, haha. i’ve baked cookies and other pastries before, but the sanikulas cookies are made of arrowroot flour and coconut milk. the dough is pressed with special wooden moulds… also, there are no electric mixers here, everything’s done by hand so… okay din siyang pang-exercise, lolz.

IMG_3507
IMG_3505

sanikulas cookies! the designs are intricate and pretty, and we got to eat them while they’re still warm, noms. they’re so good that i bought two boxes. in case you’re wondering, that’s a stuffed tarsier guarding the cookies.

IMG_3501
IMG_3508

atching lilian also made cookies with the pope’s image, this was when everyone was preparing for the papal visit, and we were allowed to take pixxors but were told not to release them until these were shown on tv. on a side note, i got so many hugs from atching lilian, she was so nice! hugs and cookies, my day was made at that point.

i forced asked maki to come with me to the balloon fest this year. that meant waking up in the middle of the night plus traveling at 2:00 am in the morning equals one grumpy bestfriend, hahaha. but after finding our tour group in the middle of ortigas, and trying to sleep in a chartered bus, complete with a screaming kid, we made it to lubao, pampanga, where the philippine international festival 2014 was held.

GEDC1087

it was still dark when we arrived but we were greeted by mini kites, giant beer, and stalls selling hot air balloon lanterns and kites.

GEDC1089

we had some free time before they launched the balloons so i decided to have pork adobo binalot for breakfast because my stomach was grumbling. it was good, it had been a long time since i had salted duck eggs for breakfast. also, the stall was being manned by one whole happy family who joked around with me while they were preparing my food. thought that was cute.

IMG_2026_b

while waiting for the balloons, i still had the chance to photograph my travel factor id. it was pink this time for the girls, i had a blue one for our baguio trip before, so i was pleased. also very pleased with the coordinators this time, they were polite and made sure we were comfortable, except for the screaming kid in the bus, nyahaha!

IMG_2023

my old chucks are becoming my new travel shoes. also, there was a grass field where we could sit on unlike the last balloon fest.

IMG_2027

found more stalls that sell miniature hot air balloons like pancakes, and finally…

IMG_2028

a poor skinny optimus prime asking for donations. didn’t get to take a pixxor of bumblebee and iron man though.

IMG_2031

this pixxor was taken by nyles, from work. maki is smiling in this pixxor. wait, what? hahaha! anyhoo, we headed towards the front to see the balloons…

oha oha! my favorite hot air balloons are the yamaha motorcycle, the caraco ice cream, and the giant blue jug. the good thing is that they didn’t do a race this year, instead they made the balloons fly and hover around, even the latecomers were able to see them.

IMG_2060

the balloons in midair look pretty ozumm and no, the beer ones do not float, hehe. aside from ogling balloons there were other things you can do at the festival…

IMG_2062

there were paragliders to watch out for…

IMG_2107

or you can play with the non-screaming kids…

IMG_2102
IMG_2095
IMG_2098

there were so many food stalls and food trucks as well… all those food smells and good drinks! maki treated me with onion rings from bk!

GEDC1172

we also lounged around in the grassy area where they set up a giant screen showing one of manny pacquio’s previous fights. thought that was a good way to keep the people entertained.

IMG_2110
GEDC1213

maki and i got souvenir shirts too! these were silk screened on the spot. mine’s blue with red and i wore it when i got home.

IMG_2114
IMG_2113

there were other things that were good for pasalubong… i bought pianono rolls, which were really good, i wish i’d bought some more and an oregano herb, it’s the dominican kind i think. yes, for some reason they sold plants during the fest, i hope i find cherry tomatoes next year! over-all i really had a blast, special thanks to my best friend maki who’s willing to endure my quirks every now and then.
